gaming and betting industry, I
have owned and run several UK

have heard of and I know the ins
and outs of the industry.
I have to write under an alias
to protect some of my business
interests but it does allow me
to say a lot that would
otherwise be kept under wraps. I
started online with the
Gambling Man web site and
continue to update that.
I aim to bring you a different
insight into every aspect of
online and real world betting
and gaming – I may occasionally
get a mate to cover for me but I
can assure you they will all

Punters taken for
$1bn in March by Vegas Casinos.
According to an official report
released by the state Gaming Control Board, Nevada casinos
won us$1.03 billion from gamblers during March -a record for
any month- for a 10.9 percent gain over the same month in
2005.
The state Gaming Control Board said
strong convention business, record leisure travel in
southern Nevada and big gains at casinos favored by locals
all figured in the milestone March win. "What makes these
numbers even more impressive is that Easter fell in March
and Easter is usually slow" for casinos, the GCB’s Frank
Streshley said, adding, "For this to happen in March was a
little bit unexpected."
"This month’s impressive numbers
were accomplished prior to the opening of Wynn Las Vegas,
which hopefully will spur even greater growth in the coming
months," Governor Kenny Guinn stated. The us$ 2.7 billion
megaresort on the Las Vegas Strip opened in late April.
The win was the amount left in
casino coffers after gamblers wagered a record us$ 13.4
billion during March, including us$ 13.3 billion on slots
and the rest on table games.

Mobile Games to lead
revenue growth Hampshire
UK, 5th May 2005: A rapid expansion in mobile content,
allied to a sharp increase in 2.5G and 3G handset adoption,
will combine to deliver global mobile entertainment revenues
of more than US$59 billion by 2009, according to a new
report from Juniper Research.
But while adult content – frequently heralded as mobile’s
“killer app” – will generate healthy revenues of nearly
US$2.2 billion by the end of the decade, the key drivers of
mobile content are expected to be gambling and games, with
their respective markets worth US$19.3 billion and US$18.5
billion respectively by 2009.
According to report author Dr Windsor Holden, “Lotteries are
ubiquitous in many countries, and if you start launching
lotteries on mobile handsets than you're tapping into a form
of gambling in which the majority of adults indulge on a
weekly basis, while sports betting and casinos are also
high-revenue businesses.”
Dr Holden added that mobile games were also beginning to
generate substantial revenues, while sales in emerging
markets – with little or no established PC or games console
base – were particularly encouraging.
Other findings from the report include:
• The mobile entertainment market will reach US$17.6 billion
in 2005, up by 71% on 2005
• After gambling (33%) and games (31%), the most popular
entertainment services in 2009 will be music (16%) and
sports (8%)
• Ringtones – which currently account for 31% of the mobile
entertainment market – will contribute no more than 8% by
2009
• The increasing adoption of non-voice services in the US
and Canada will push North American revenues to US$11.3
billion in 2009, up from just over US$1 billion in 2005.

Golden Palace seek
publicity with Popes Car
The online gambling site goldenpalace.com paid the
21-year-old Benjamin Halbe €188,938 (US $244,500 approx) for
the car that once belonged to Pope Benedict XVI.
Hable bought the car for €9,999 from
a second-hand car dealer in January without knowing the
identity of the previous owner.
It was only when Halbe obtained the
car's registration documents confirming Joseph Ratzinger as
the former owner that he realised the pope could make him a
rich man.
He then put the car on the online
auction site eBay with the starting price €9,999 of and
received 8.5 million bids, with the casino emerging as the
highest bidder.

Think global say EU lawyers at European Gambling
Briefing All parties inputting into the

to take a wider view, not the current US/ EU centric
thinking that currently pervades, was the message

Briefing held in Brussels, 25-26 April
Outlining his vision of proposed EU
harmonization, speaker Martin Sychold, Project
Manager of the Study of Gambling Services in the EU

but also warned that operators, lawyers and
regulators are well advised to try to aim for
‘Uniform international standards’ in order that the
recognition of gambling growth and other regulation

France to allow
Online Casino gambling
Online Casino gambling has long been popular in Europe.
In some respects the online casino legislation may change
sooner in Europe and the UK than in the US. There have been
recent debates about it in parliament. French online casinos
are no exception to this rule. The French online casino
business has been in full swing for several years. It is
estimated that the French gamble twice as often and for
three times as long as British online casino players.
Land based casino gambling in
France is highly restricted and if you want to play
casino games in France your only choice is state-managed
operations. Government run betting business enterprises are
limited to Pari Mutuel Urbain lotto and the National
Lottery. The majority of areas in France are forbidden from
operating land based casinos and casino machines, apart from
a few small areas of the country. But an inconsistency in EU
policy has allowed for French players to play at the
online casino.
The large increase in high speed
internet connection within France and Europe in general has
a lot to do with the rise in popularity of the online
casino. It is actually felt that the online casino is
in fact the catalyst for the demand for high speed internet.
To play most online casino games and use the software
properly, high speed internet is required.
The relationship between high speed
internet and the online casino is still a grey area. One
country that seems to contradict the correlation is Spain.
It has one of the lowest rates of online gambling in the EU
despite having a large high speed internet market.

Steve Wynn opens
latest Vegas Casino venture
Casino magnate Steve Wynn opened his
long-awaited Wynn Las Vegas property just after the stroke
of midnight Thursday to hordes of gamblers eager for a
glimpse of the lavish $2.7 billion gambling, hotel and
shopping complex.
The crowd spilled onto the Las Vegas
Strip as security guards restricted the number of people
allowed into the curved bronze tower.
Some waited as long as three hours
to enter, then seemed awe-struck as they roamed deep apricot
hallways carpeted in bright red with a purple and green
floral motif and gazed up at intricately decorated ceilings.
"I think it's spectacular," said
David Schwartz, coordinator of the Gaming Studies Research
Center at the University of Nevada Las Vegas

Chartwell to
Offer Cash Bingo
CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS
WIRE)--April 25, 2005--Chartwell Technology Inc. (TSX: CWH),
a leading provider of gaming software systems to the online
and remote gaming industry, and Bingo.com, Ltd. (OTCBB:
BNGOF), operator of the Internet's pre-eminent bingo portal,
are pleased to announce that Chartwell has been selected as
Bingo.com's official supplier of its cash gaming system.
Bingo.com is one of the world's
largest online bingo destinations, with a player base of
over one million registered players. Through its player
acquisition strategy and unique brand identity Bingo.com
attracts over 30,000 visitors each day, averages over 800
new player signups per day and has served up over four
billion Bingo cards to date on a play for fun basis. Due to
the recent positive regulatory movements (UK Gambling Bill),
Bingo.com has decided to take advantage of its brand and
dominant position in the free online bingo industry to
diversify its business model and enter the play for cash
bingo market. Under the terms of the license agreement,
Chartwell will provide Bingo.com with its gaming system,
offering players the experience of flash based 75 and 90
ball bingo games, complete with chat features and the
opportunity to play Chartwell's full suite of soft games
which are offered as side games or intermission
entertainment.
"We are delighted to have been
selected as the software provider to one of the world's
largest online bingo companies," states Darold Parken,
President and CEO of Chartwell. "Community based gaming has
become one of the fastest growing segments of the gaming
industry and the launch of Bingo.com's play for cash
offering gives Chartwell a strong industry partner and
represents a significant step towards positioning the
Company as the leading bingo software provider to this
exciting gaming market segment."
"We are excited to be working with
the Chartwell team," comments Tarrnie Williams, CEO of
Bingo.com. "Collaborating with Chartwell will ensure a
smooth transition into the cash bingo business and position
us to take advantage of our strong market position.
Chartwell was our preferred supplier for the cash bingo
gaming system because of their reputation in the industry,
their adherence to auditable gaming systems and their
commitment to quality software development."
While still in its infancy, online
bingo has already attracted more than five million players
with a demographic profile that differs significantly from
that of online casino and poker players. This suggests that
bingo will make a significant contribution to the growth of
the online gaming industry, expected to generate revenue
exceeding $18 billion by 2010, according to Christiansen
Capital Advisors. The growth of online gaming as a whole has
the opportunity to significantly exceed published forecasts.
Regulation in the United Kingdom and other nations adopting
similar online gaming policies are expected to facilitate
this growth

Stanley Want
to Run Super Casino
LIVERPOOL-BASED gaming group
Stanley Leisure yesterday threw its hat in the ring in the
battle to be the operator of Britain's only Las Vegas-style
super casino.
Last week the Government
agreed to slash the number of such outlets from eight to
just one in order to get its gambling reforms through
parliament before the General Election.
The belief in the gaming
industry is that the one super casino will be built in
Blackpool and Stanley, which is already the UK's biggest
casino operator, said it would be keen to run it.
Michael Riddy, managing
director of the firm's casinos division, told the Daily
Post: "The decision to limit the number to just one was both
good news and bad news for us.
"The good news for us is that
we will see less competition from overseas and I think a lot
of the big operators from places like the US will now not
bother.
"The bad news I suppose is
that there will only be one regional casino - we had wanted
to develop those ourselves. The one regional is likely to be
in Blackpool and we would like to be the operator."
Stanley already runs 41
casinos across the country, including four upmarket
establishments in London and its large Star City complex in
Birmingham.
Last November, it announced a
joint venture with Malaysian based Genting International to
develop new regional casinos in the UK.
Mr Riddy said yesterday the
group had also won vital concessions from the government in
respect of slot machines and access for customers.
As part of the Bill, which it
is believed will become law in the summer, the number of
slot machines allowed in current casinos will be increased
from 10 to 20 and the prize limit raised from £2,000 to
£4,000.
The 24 hour rule - which
dictates people have to be members of a casino for 24 hours
before they can gamble - will also be abolished.
Mr Riddy was appointed
managing director of Stanley Casinos in August to lead the
division through its next development stage. He was
previously group finance director.
It suffered a blow earlier
this year when it revealed one lucky high roller had won
around £3m at one of its prestige London outlets.

American Casino Operators Livid Over UK
Government Retreat
UK -- As
reported by the Daily Telegraph: "American
casino operators were livid last night over the
Government's latest retreat on the Gambling
Bill, which will limit a new class of
mega-casinos to just one venue.
"...Leading
American casino groups have spent several years
drawing up detailed plans for about 40 such
venues, arguing they could create up to 100,000
jobs, regenerate local areas and see as much as
£10billion of inward investment into the UK.
"...Last night,
one source close to a US operator said: 'It
sucks. I can't believe the Government has simply
caved in. We've gone from 40 casinos to eight to
one.'
"Tony
Wollenberg, a leading gambling industry lawyer,
said: "We have a Government which has no
backbone, no intellectual ability to take on
board sound, well-reasoned arguments.
"...'This
decision has cost the UK up to 100,000 jobs and
£5 to £10billion of investment. We are a total
laughing stock.'..."

Chartwell
Welcomes
ider of gaming software
systems to the online and remote gaming industry is
pleased to report the passage of legislation (the
Gaming Bill) in the United Kingdom that will
introduce regulatnline gambling.
"This is an
historic development for the online gaming sector,"
said Lee Richardson, Chief Executive, Chartwell
Games Corp. "The United Kingdom is the first G-7
nation to establish a framework of regulation that
provides industry standards aimed at providing a
safe, secure and regulated environment for players."
He continued, "We also think that this important
legislation, the Gaming Bill, expected to become
operational in the UK during 2006, may provide the
necessary impetus for similar regulatory
advancements in other jurisdictions, including
elsewhere in Europe."
In anticipation of
the UK regulatory changes Chartwell has invested
significantly in Europe with the opening of its
Chartwell Games Head Office in London as announced
in the second quarter of 2005 and the development of
responsible gaming functionality and certification
capabilities for it software systems. Chartwell's
team of professionals with extensive European
experience in the online gaming industry remain
focused on the further deployment of Chartwell's
gaming systems including Casino Games, Community
Based Multi-Player Poker and Bingo Games, Mobile,
Lottery, and Kiosk based solutions.
According to
industry reports published by Informa Media Group
and Merrill Lynch, electronic gambling revenues are
expected to exceed $14 Billion by the end of 2006
with Europe accounting for over $7.5 Billion of the
total. These figures do not reflect the impact that
regulation could have on the industry nor does it
take into account the potential for other nations to
implement similar regulatory environments following
the developments that have occurred in the UK.
